The Prusiner Laboratory is offering postdoctoral positions in the field of prion biology to highly qualified and motivated postgraduates. To be eligible, candidates must have attained a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry, biophysics, cell biology, genetics, molecular biology or neuroscience, have a passion for research and a strong desire to discover the causes and cures for neurodegenerative diseases.

Protein Production Manager and Structural Biologist / Assistant Adjunct Professor
The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking a Protein Production Manager and Structural Biologist (Assistant Adjunct Professor) to manage the protein production and purification core facility at the IND. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Dr. Stanley Prusiner. The successful candidate will also lead projects that aim to elucidate the structure of prion proteins. This position is expected to organize and analyze relevant data and communicate the findings to other scientists at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases and UCSF through regular meetings and reports.
The Protein Production Manager and Structural Biologist will provide hands-on management, administration and leadership to the cross-functional research teams, in order to ensure that projects proceed on time and within budget. Responsibilities of this role include directing and overseeing the performance of laboratory operations, data management, writing of manuscripts and grants, resource management, and quality control. The successful candidate will serve as the key operational interface between the Director, senior scientists, and research project teams.
QUALIFICATIONS
PhD in a related field of specialty including biophysics, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell biology, chemistry or neuroscience.
In-depth knowledge of protein production and purification methodologies.
At least 5 years of experience utilizing techniques such as NMR and X-ray diffraction to elucidate the structure of macromolecules.
Candidates who have conduced structural studies of large protein complexes, fibers and/or aggregates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants should possess excellent leadership, organization, communication and interpersonal skills as well as exhibit evidence of imagination in problem solving.
Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated superb command of written and spoken English.
This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. Salary is dependent upon experience.

Staff Research Associate II
This position is responsible for utilizing high throughput screening of small molecules in cell-based assays to identify lead compounds. These lead compounds are then chemically optimized and validated in animal models. Duties include sample preparation, assay operation, data acquisition, scientific reporting. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary Drug Discovery research team whose research interests span many fields of scientific research. The goal of the team is to identify effective therapeutics against prion diseases.
This position will originally start at the Parnassus Campus of UCSF, but will relocate by August to our South San Francisco location. At this time, there are no UCSF shuttles offering service to our South San Francisco location. Employees will be responsible for their own transportation.
QUALIFICATIONS:
B.S. degree in Biology or related field and 3 years of relevant working experience or M.S. degree in Biology or related field and 1 year of relevant working experience.
Highly interested in drug discovery research. Effective team member, as well as motivated, independent individual researcher.
Proficiency in mammalian cell culture and sterile technique, as well as molecular biology (cloning, PCR, primer design) and biochemical assays western blots and ELISA).
Experience in performing plate assays and the use of automation systems. Proficiency in data acquisition, storage and analysis.
Proficiency in basic molecular biology techniques (cloning, PCR, primer design, DNA/RNA/protein quantification and gel analysis).
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
80 85% of time required with precise hand-manipulation of pipetting, robotics, and handling 96-well and 384-well micro-plates.
Enthusiasm and scientific curiosity a must.
Computer literacy on both Macintosh and PC.
